Welcome to the Saddlemire Homestead.
The Homestead is owned by the Town of Knox and houses the collection maintained by Knox Historical Society. Learn about the Homestead's history here. The museum is open for special programs and self-guided tours/research during the warm months. See our calendar for dates and times. Contact us to arrange a tour.

The Front Porch
The wide front porch is a gathering place to watch the Memorial Day parade, stage presentations, and share refreshments. Learn about the hamlets of Knox here. More about Merrymen's Tea House here. Information about our special re-issue here.

The Front Room
As you enter from the front porch, you come into the Front Room, home to our changing displays, the Bicentennial Quilt, literature table, and gift desk. Information about our quilt shows here and here. Learn about our metal detecting program here. Information on the Stevens family here.

The Reading Room

The Kitchen
As you walk back through the Front Room and go by the roll-top desk, take a right into our Kitchen. The "Hurley Harvest" exhibit at Hurley Heritage Society inspired us to give the Kitchen a well-deserved makeover in 2015. We added displays about dairy equipment, apple-pie making, "The Farmer's Wife," mechanical apple parers, and Ellen Saddlemire's cookbook. Learn more about historic homes of Knox here. The Kitchen: Before the Makeover

The Pill Box Room
As you exit the kitchen, look to your right and read about Nathan Crary's invention, the disposable basswood pill box. Continue clockwise around the room and learn about the cottage industry that made Knox "The Pill Box Capital of the World." Learn more about the pill box industry here. 

The Tool Room and the Farm Room
Beyond the Pill Box Room are two back rooms. The first houses our tool collection and the second room has our farm exhibit. Learn more about the farms of Knox here.
The Upstairs Hall
Take the stairs by the roll-top desk to the second floor. The hallway serves as a small gallery, with family portraits and a drawing of the Presbyterian manse. Learn more about the churches of Knox here.

The School Room
At one time, Knox had 15 rural school districts, each with its own one-room schoolhouse, similar to the one re-created here. The Berne-Knox Central School District was established in 1932. The Knox Cave Room
Knox Cave and its above-ground roller skating rink were very popular tourist attractions in the 1930s through the 1950s. Learn more about Knox Cave here.

The Patriots' Room
We honor the patriots of Knox, from the Revolutionary War through the Anti-Rent War of the 1840s to our service people of today. Learn more about military service in Knox here.
