The Good Old School Days
Picture
Former students of one-room schoolhouses — from left, Bernice Shultes Bunzey, who attended West
Berne School #15; Pauline Salisbury Williman, Knox School #5; Jennie Stevens, and Helen Quay Coulter,
Knox School #6 — talk about their school days during the Knox Historical Society’s program.

Recreating history: Re-enactor Toni Lasher, standing at rear left, is the schoolmarm at the Knox
Historical Society’s final summer program, about life in a one-room schoolhouse, which took place on
Sunday, Aug. 25. Here, she tells the children that two students often shared one wooden desk. They
had to stand up carefully to avoid banging the seat against the desk behind them.
