This block was named by Harold Albright, who helped install it after a very hot day of haying. Jane McLean used the traditional Churn Dash design as a tribute to Mrs. Ina Beebe, who was well known for her homemade butter.

Energy in Motion is a traditional Churn Dash (AKA Hole in the Barn Door or Monkey Wrench) with a Pinwheel in the center.

(Top) Fox and Geese: Do you see the big red fox and the gray Canada geese? In the winter, children at School #5 played a game of tag called Fox and Geese in the snow.
(Middle) Green Maple Leaf: This is the symbol for NYS Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. At the Nature Center, we welcome the new green growth of spring.
(Bottom) Snail's Trail: Take a walk on a nature trail through field or forest. Can you find a snail or other invertebrate animal (without a vertebral column)?

(Bottom) Wood Lily: The Nature Center abounds with native wildflowers in summer. Native plants are important sources of food and shelter for local and visiting animals. Did you visit the wildflower garden?

(Top) Tin Horn (Churn Dash): Symbol of the Anti-Rent Wars fought in the Helderbergs to end the patroon system of land ownership. The Patriots' Room in the museum has a tin horn on display.
(Middle) Knox Cave Stairway (Snail's Trail): From 1930s to the 1950s, Knox Cave, with its roller skating rink, was a major attraction and employed many local teenagers. The Knox Cave Room in the museum has photos and artifacts from the cave. The cave is now closed to the public.
(Bottom) Corn and Beans: The early settlers of Knox were farmers. Agriculture remains an important part of life today. The museum has many antique farm tools on display.

(Top) Log Cabin: Early settlers use local timber to build their first log cabin homes. The museum has several genealogies and stories of early settlers.
(Middle) Pill Box (Ohio Star): Knox is the "Pill Box Capital of the World". Workers in small factories made millions of these little wooden boxes and shipped them off the Hill. The museum's Pill Box Room displays the materials, tools, and methods used in this cottage industry of the 19th century.
(Bottom) Bear Paw: The museum has the skin of a bear shot in Knox. Pictures and newspaper articles on display describe the event in detail. Bears were a threat to the early settlers and occasionally come through Knox today.

Vicki Vattimo designed and created this double star, adding her own touches at the corners. The weathered barnboards set off the quilt nicely at her farm, Helderberg 1839. Please respect the private property of this working farm and remain in your vehicle.

The ivory, green, and burgundy paints match the colors of the house. Vicki saw this pattern on a barn in Kentucky but wasn't sure of the name.

Dennis Barber's mother, Nicolina Barber, was a well-known quilter. The quilt she made for her first grandson, Nicolas, was the inspiration for this barn quilt. The barn quilt is illuminated at night.

Clay's Choice
Henry Clay was a 19th c. politician who said "I'd rather be right than president." When settlers began moving west, they sometimes called this quilt block "Star of the West." Part of Mrs. Barber's quilt is shown below.

Dennis Barber took down the basketball hoop of his youth and installed his creation, based on a lovely quilt handmade by his mother, Nicolina Barber. He carefully painted all those curves with a brush.
10. Dutch Puzzle

T. Schwendeman designed and painted this barn quilt and had it built by Travis Loden of Gallupville. The swirling windmill may be a nod to the Dutch roots of many local families or perhaps to the very windy weather in Berne.

Dutch Puzzle (or Dutchman's Puzzle)
This traditional quilt block from the 19th century is made up of sets of Flying Geese (right triangles in flight formation). The wide red border and white cornerstones frame the Dutch Puzzle perfectly.

Mary Browne created this original design in
tribute to her husband. John Elberfeld constructed and painted it. Drive down the driveway and turn at the circle to see this quilt high up on the barn. Please respect private property on this working farm and remain in your vehicle!

He was a bear trapper, waterfowl biologist, and worked on endangered land, such as swamps, which most people consider marginal. The barn quilt depicts two bears, front and rear paws, Flying Geese (traditional pattern), and cattail plants.

Mary chose dark colors for this traditional Amish pattern when she made a fabric quilt. John Elberfeld recreated the quilt in wood and paint.

Mary Browne adapted the aboriginal design to honor her daughter Heidi, a midwife. Hand-painted by John Elberfeld--see the little joey in the pouch? Best views of "Aboriginal Kangaroo" are driving up Pleasant Valley Road from Berne-Altamont Road (CR 156); it's on the side of the barn just after the yellow house.
Black's Palace is a very special place in Queensland, Australia. Women have congregated there for many years to talk about women's business and birthing. The area has 9000+ paintings on sandstone cliffs, including stencils of hands and feet, as well as being a burying ground.

The Rowes designed this 4'x4' for their family business, Alpaca Shack. Take Irish Hill opposite Fox Creek Market on Rte. 443 for the best view. Hand-painted by John Elberfeld.

14. “Sun, Star, Windmill, Sawmill, … Octagon Barn Dance Floor Interwoven Squares”

Amy Lauterbach Pokorny and Wilma Lee designed the center of the floor at the Octagon Barn. Amy and Russ Pokorny recreated it as a barn quilt 6' in diameter, using local rough-cut hemlock and white pine, with some dark stain. The post-and-beam barn is an architectural gem set in the fields of Knox. The owners host star parties in conjunction with Dudley Observatory, barn dances with Northeastern Cave Conservancy, a holiday market in December, and many other community events.

15. Township Tavern 1880

OK to get out of your car in the parking lot, but please respect this private property. Better yet, come on in! Info on Township Tavern's hours/specials here.
The Township Hotel was a wayside inn along the old Schoharie Plank Road in East Township, Knox. Today the family-friendly restaurant still caters to the hungry and thirsty. Owner Paul Centi asked John Elberfeld to use an 1880s photo as the basis for the 8'x8' design. The porches have been removed, but the building has the same basic structure. And the road is paved--the old planks and tollbooth are history.
16. Golden Acres' Treasures

Laura Tenney of Golden Acres farm designed and created this barn quilt, inspired by their love for the farm, Charolais cattle, and John Deere equipment. This is her first barn quilt, and she had a stencil specially made for the center design. Charolais are beef cattle that originated in the Burgundy region of France.Gerry Boone installed this 7'x7' diagonally (on point) on a shed near the road. This is a working farm = private property!

Sunflowers on the property inspired Pamela Harder to create this beautiful sunflower against a blue sky. It's her own design, based on "fractal-like stuff." The barn quilt is 4' x 4'.

Direct descendants of original settler Christian Zandt designed this patriotic barn quilt to honor the "sands" (see the hourglass?). The Von Hauggs asked John Elberfeld to create this homage to their family history. Remember, the beautiful brick house is on private property--please remain on the road.
19. Boomhower Farms

"Grandma's Legacy" was created as a tribute to an honorable and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother - Marlene Boomhower. Marlene and her husband Dennis founded Boomhower Farms in 1961, first as a dairy and now a beef cattle and haying operation. The red and cream colors of the quilt are used throughout the farm, the family added the blue to honor America.
20. Robin's Nest:
Created by Robin Porter, this 4x4 quilt accents the gray and black of the outbuildings on the Porter's property. Flanked by two Canada geese, the quilt has blue corner accents and is framed in black.

Barn quilt enthusiasts without a barn or garage near the road can still participate in the HQBT by using a post or a fence. This barn quilt is held up by pressure treated 2x4s. Two 8-foot pieces are overlapped about 4 feet to make a post 12 feet long with 3 feet buried in the ground. A rigid right angle bar supports the barn quilt at top and bottom. No screws go through the face of the barn quilt.

Mary Browne adapted the aboriginal design to honor her daughter Heidi, a midwife. Hand-painted by John Elberfeld--see the little joey in the pouch? Best views of "Aboriginal Kangaroo" are driving up Pleasant Valley Road from Berne-Altamont Road (CR 156); it's on the side of the barn just after the yellow house.
Black's Palace is a very special place in Queensland, Australia. Women have congregated there for many years to talk about women's business and birthing. The area has 9000+ paintings on sandstone cliffs, including stencils of hands and feet, as well as being a burying ground.

14. “Sun, Star, Windmill, Sawmill, … Octagon Barn Dance Floor Interwoven Squares”

Amy Lauterbach Pokorny and Wilma Lee designed the center of the floor at the Octagon Barn. Amy and Russ Pokorny recreated it as a barn quilt 6' in diameter, using local rough-cut hemlock and white pine, with some dark stain. The post-and-beam barn is an architectural gem set in the fields of Knox. The owners host star parties in conjunction with Dudley Observatory, barn dances with Northeastern Cave Conservancy, a holiday market in December, and many other community events.

15. Township Tavern 1880

The Township Hotel was a wayside inn along the old Schoharie Plank Road in East Township, Knox. Today the family-friendly restaurant still caters to the hungry and thirsty. Owner Paul Centi asked John Elberfeld to use an 1880s photo as the basis for the 8'x8' design. The porches have been removed, but the building has the same basic structure. And the road is paved--the old planks and tollbooth are history.
16. Golden Acres' Treasures

Laura Tenney of Golden Acres farm designed and created this barn quilt, inspired by their love for the farm, Charolais cattle, and John Deere equipment. This is her first barn quilt, and she had a stencil specially made for the center design. Charolais are beef cattle that originated in the Burgundy region of France.Gerry Boone installed this 7'x7' diagonally (on point) on a shed near the road. This is a working farm = private property!
17. Sunflower

Sunflowers on the property inspired Pamela Harder to create this beautiful sunflower against a blue sky. It's her own design, based on "fractal-like stuff." The barn quilt is 4' x 4'.

18. Sand Farm

Direct descendants of original settler Christian Zandt designed this patriotic barn quilt to honor the "sands" (see the hourglass?). The Von Hauggs asked John Elberfeld to create this homage to their family history. Remember, the beautiful brick house is on private property--please remain on the road.
19. Boomhower Farms

"Grandma's Legacy" was created as a tribute to an honorable and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother - Marlene Boomhower. Marlene and her husband Dennis founded Boomhower Farms in 1961, first as a dairy and now a beef cattle and haying operation. The red and cream colors of the quilt are used throughout the farm, the family added the blue to honor America.
20. Robin's Nest:
Created by Robin Porter, this 4x4 quilt accents the gray and black of the outbuildings on the Porter's property. Flanked by two Canada geese, the quilt has blue corner accents and is framed in black.

Barn quilt enthusiasts without a barn or garage near the road can still participate in the HQBT by using a post or a fence. This barn quilt is held up by pressure treated 2x4s. Two 8-foot pieces are overlapped about 4 feet to make a post 12 feet long with 3 feet buried in the ground. A rigid right angle bar supports the barn quilt at top and bottom. No screws go through the face of the barn quilt.
