Winter 2015: KNOX SCHOOL #5
Marshall Warner, Beulah Ketcham and David Sagendorf study at the school on May 10, 1929.
|
Knox School #5 was a one-room schoolhouse on Ketcham Road. Under the direction of Daniel Driscoll, the small building was restored and is currently on the grounds of Thacher Nature Center. It is the only building in Knox in the National Register of Historic Places.
The historic marker reads:
KNOX SCHOOL #5 Knox school district #5 was formed in 1822. This school was built in 1898. Restored by Kiwanis, & placed on the National Register in 2005. Friends of Thacher Park |
Dan Driscoll wrote a book about the schoolhouse. More information here.

Driscoll will school historical society on Knox District 5
To the Editor:
Daniel Driscoll will tell the Knox Historical Society about Knox District 5 at the society’s meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 3. The restored schoolhouse still stands on the grounds of the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center on Ketcham Road. Driscoll, a trustee of the society, is the author of History of a One-Room Schoolhouse in Knox, NY.
The book contains his transcriptions of handwritten district records from 1824 to 1905. The meeting minutes provide glimpses into 19th-Century life in the Hilltowns.
An entry in 1835 states that the next annual meeting will be held “at early candle light.” A list of taxpayers in 1837 includes a widow who, although unable to vote or hold office, was liable for 73 cents in school taxes.
Information about purchasing the book is available on the society’s website: knoxhistoricalsociety.org. In the coming months, the society will exhibit historic photographs and artifacts from the town’s school districts at Knox Town Hall.
The public is invited to the meeting at 7 p.m. at Knox Town Hall. Refreshments will be served. The Knox Historical Society works to preserve, protect, and promote the historic culture of our town. Please contact me at 872-2082 or [email protected] to learn more about this event or the society’s activities.
