President Theodore Roosevelt visits the Berne Knox Community
On Friday, September 23, 2016 President TheodoreRoosevelt visited the Berne Knox Westerlo High School and reminisced about his childhood, career before his presidency, and his accomplishments as the 26th President of the United States. Theodore was a sickly child who had to be tutored at home. He was a voracious reader, loved nature, and learned how to box so he could defend himself from bullies. He reminded us of his role in the Spanish American War and that he was responsible for many things, such as the expansion of the National Parks, the Meat Inspection Act, and the Panama Canal. As a big game hunter he refused to shoot a bear that was tied to a tree, saying it was unsportsmanlike. The familiar teddy bear toy was subsequently named after him.
President Roosevelt took the time to pose with many of the populace who came to see him.
President Roosevelt's visit was a collaboration between the KnoxHistorical Society and the Social Studies department at BKW and was made possible by a grant from the BKW PTA.
