New contributions: The Knox Historical Society recently received several items from the former Gage Stock Farm. Dennis Barber, left, explains that “Gardener’s Pride” is dehydrated manure while Jenn Geckler admires the hand-painted advertising show card.

Altamont Enterprise: Five reasons to join the historical society

To the Editor:
With warmer weather approaching, I’d like to share with you the top five reasons to support the Knox Historical Society:

— 5. Five Trails: During the New York State Path Through History Weekend, June 20 and 21, you can explore five “Historic Trails of Knox.” Our walking and driving tours will appeal to a variety of interests.

— 4. Four Summer Events: We’ll open the Saddlemire Homestead for the season on Memorial Day, May 25. In June, stop by for “Historic Trails of Knox” maps and tour guides. On July 26, our program will be “Coping with Life’s ‘Necessaries:’ Cleanliness and Sanitation in the 18th and 19th Centuries.” We’ll showcase “Historic Markers in Knox” and related items from our collection on Aug. 9.

— 3. Three Months: During June, July, and August, the Saddlemire Homestead will be open Wednesdays, from noon to 2 p.m., for self-guided tours and research.

— 2. Two Historic Markers: We’ll dedicate historic markers this summer to commemorate two early thoroughfares, the Palatine Road and the Schoharie Plank Road.

— 1. One Year: Annual membership in Knox Historical Society helps us continue our mission to preserve, protect, and promote the historic culture of our town. Our membership year begins in May, and we invite community members to join us. More information about becoming a member is on our website athttp://www.knoxhistoricalsociety.org/membership.html.

Please visit our website at www.knoxhistoricalsociety.org to learn more about the society’s activities and details of our summer programs. You may also contact me at jelberfeld@aol.com.
